Shoulder Pain

The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the human body. It allows the shoulder to move forward, backward and in a circular motion.

Shoulder pain is usually a result of the following:

  • Manual labor such as lifting heavy objects
  • Playing sports or lifting weights
  • Repetitive movement such as in an assembly line

Some symptoms of shoulder pain include:

  • Pain in that resides in and around the shoulder blade
  • Numbness of the neck, shoulder or arm
  • Pain that travels along the nerve from the shoulder down the arm
  • Tingling described as a pins-and-needles sensation throughout the arm
  • Difficulty lifting your arm over your head

Problems with your shoulder are likely to increase with age. As the human body grows older, the soft tissues surrounding the shoulders tend to weaken with age. Usually, you will feel radiating pain along the path of the nerve from the neck to the shoulder. This might be caused by an irritated or compressed cervical nerve root.

Additionally, neck pain can often lead to shoulder pain. Since multiple nerves run between the neck and the shoulder, one or more of these nerves could be at risk if the pain is ignored. The best way to avoid further damage is by seeking treatment.
